Hempcrete is a superstar building material!
In 2010, something groundbreaking happened in the world of sustainable living — and it happened right here in North Carolina. The first U.S. home built using hemp-based building materials was completed in Asheville, setting a precedent for eco-friendly construction that’s still inspiring change today.
What Is a Hemp Home?
A “hemp home” isn’t built out of hemp plants alone, of course. The star material is hempcrete — a blend of the woody core of the hemp plant, lime, and water. When cured, hempcrete forms a strong, lightweight, and breathable building material that’s naturally insulating, pest-resistant, and fire-resistant. It’s also carbon-negative, meaning it absorbs more CO₂ over its lifetime than it emits during production.
Why Asheville Was the Perfect Place
Asheville, with its strong culture of sustainability and love for innovative building methods, was the ideal setting for the first hemp home in the U.S. The project caught the attention of environmentalists, architects, and green builders nationwide, proving that hemp wasn’t just a crop — it was a game-changer for construction.
Benefits Beyond Sustainability
The Asheville hemp home showcased several advantages that traditional building materials just can’t match:
- Superior insulation for reduced heating and cooling costs.
- Moisture regulation, helping prevent mold and improve indoor air quality.
- Durability without toxins — no need for harsh chemical treatments.
And because hemp grows quickly and thrives without heavy pesticide use, the supply chain for these materials can be far more sustainable than that of concrete or timber.
Why This Matters Now
Although the 2010 Asheville hemp home was just one project, it demonstrated the untapped potential of hemp in modern life — from what we build to what we wear, eat, and use for wellness. At Healing Green Farms, we share that vision. Our handcrafted CBD tinctures and topicals are part of the same story: using hemp to create healthier, cleaner, more sustainable products you can trust.
